ItemThe B2C e-commerce index of Thailand- A paradox of online penetrationThe present study is an investigation into the penetration of business-to-consumer ecommerce in Thailand. The study has been conducted by a field survey among the consumers by questionnaire method and collected samples from regular online and regular offline shoppers in the country. The total sample size was 1535 units collected from the north, northeastern, central and southern regions of the country. The findings of the study revealed that penetration of online shopping is 15 percent with an estimated range of 13 to 17 percent for the entire population, and it is higher in central and northeastern regions but lower in north and southern regions. The important observation in the study is that there is very low penetration of online shopping in Thailand due to the lack of trust in online traders and non-confidence in online payments.

ItemImpact of B2C e-Commerce on small retailers in Thailand: An investigation into Profitability, Operating efficiency, and Employment generation. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the economic and social impacts of business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce in the small retail sector of certain commodities in Thailand. A primary sample survey was conducted for the collection of data from the north, northeast, central and southern regions of the country during the months of January to March 2018. The data were collected from small retail outlets of books and magazines, cosmetics, mobile, and laptop who have adopted online sales with physical shop, and doing exclusively offline sales. The total sample size of the study was 1462 units. The results revealed that adoption of online sales in retailing by small retailers could raise their profitability in the short-term, medium-term, and long-term periods. However, the operating efficiency of the firms measured in terms of operating expenses and their social impact calculated by new employment generation and increased employee compensation were not laudable in Thailand on their transformation from brick-and-mortar to click-and-mortar stores. Another important observation of the study is that the non-adoption of online sales is highly prevalent in the small enterprise segment of retailing in Thailand.

ItemThe influence of consumer-generated electronic word-of-mouth on travelers’ intention for online hotel booking: A study at Phuket in Thailand(International Journal of Engineering Research in Computer Science and Engineering, 2019-09-01) Varughese Kizhakkacharuvil John ; Thumapun, S.The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of seven attributes of consumer-generated electronic word-of-mouth on Thai and foreign leisure travelers’ intention for online hotel booking. The sample data were collected from Amanpuri Resort, located in Phuket, Thailand. The sampling method that was employed in this study was non-probability sampling, and the sample size (N = 110) was calculated by using Green’s formula for unknown population. A self-administered questionnaire, consisting of 4 sections, was manually distributed to participants prior to their departure from the hotel. Seven attributes of consumer-generated electronic word-of-mouth and intention for online hotel booking were measured using a 5-point interval scale. Descriptive statistical analysis such as frequency distribution, means, and standard deviation, were used to describe respondents’ demographic characteristics. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to test the relationship between seven attributes of consumer-generated electronic word-of-mouth and intention for online hotel booking. There is high degree of positive correlation (R = 0.88) between ‘intention for online hotel booking’ and hotel reviews by ‘electronic word of mouth’. The predictor variables have an explanatory power of 77.4 (R2) percent on the predicted variable ‘Intention for online hotel booking’. The F-value (7, 102) 101.67 is significant at less than 1 percent level and hence the model is proved as significant for the data collected for the study. Thus, the hypotheses testing revealed that the seven attributes of consumer-generated electronic word-of-mouth have an influence on Thai and foreign leisure travelers’ intention for online hotel booking

ItemMeasuring Efficacy of an Online Reading Literacy Program in English- A New Conceptual FrameworkThe objective of this study is to develop a conceptual framework for testing the efficacy of an online reading program, namely, ‘Literacy Pro’ which was developed by Scholastic Corporation in the US to improve the English reading and comprehension skill of students. The conceptual framework that is developed will also measure the impact of students’ performance in international English proficiency exams, such as PISA, PIRLS, TIMSS, and ASSET after they have participated in the online reading literacy program. It is the accurate and timely identification of the students ‘at-risk’ in reading difficulties so that additional instructions or interventions can be provided. From the measurement perspective, effective screening tools demonstrated high levels of sensitivity in identifying those students who will actually encounter reading difficulties, as well as high levels of specificity in the accurate identification of those students who are not likely to demonstrate reading difficulties. A research instrument is adapted to explore the reading strategies used by the students and recommended by the teachers. Effective reading strategy involves self-directed control of the learning process inside and outside the classroom.

ItemPenetration of eCommerce and Perception of Consumers in Thailand(International Journal of Advanced Science and Technology (IJAST) - ELSEVIER, 2019-10-08) Varughese Kizhakkacharuvil John ; Asawin WichayachakornThe study focused on business-to-consumer eCommerce in Thailand regarding its penetration and the perceptions of consumers in the country. Stratified sampling was used to collect data from the different regions of Thailand because of its diversified nature in culture and economic activities. By the offline questionnaire survey, conducted in January to March 2018, data were collected from regular online shoppers and regular offline buyers and the same were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Books & Magazines, Cosmetics, Mobile, and Laptop are the four consumer items used in the study to investigate the penetration and it was estimated that the average penetration of online shopping is twenty five percent in volume on these commodities. The convenience of online shopping is the most influencing factor for positive attitude towards online shopping. Lack of trust and confidence in electronic transactions due to the paucity of adequate protective laws; and the consumers’ perceptions towards product performance risk and financial risk are major deterrents of eCommerce in Thailand. It has been observed that the penetration of online shopping is not a threat, for the time being, to the traditional retailers of these commodities since they have more than double the market share of online buyers.

ItemRetirement Planning: An Analysis of the Factors Influencing Thai People( 2020-07-15) Varughese Kizhakkacharuvil John ; Supreeya NamchaisawadwongThe purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of Retirement Planning with Attitude towards retirement planning, financial literacy, and goal clarity among Thai citizens. Also, the impact of demographic profile was tested as a moderator. A sample set of 151 units was used in the study which were collected through random sampling from different centers of Bangkok during the period of Oct-Nov, 2019. A moderated regression model was developed for hypothesis testing and the same was tested by the process of Andrew F. Hayes moderated regression model and the model is found significant at less than 1 percent level since the F-value (5,145) is 46.17, where p < 0.01. The explanatory power of the model is 61.42 percent (R-sq=0.6142) and there is high degree of positive correlation (R = 0.78) between Retirement Planning (DV) and the independent variables. The effect of the moderator variable ‘income’ on ‘attitude’ increases as the income level raises and that has a significant influence on retirement planning. The moderated regression model of Retirement Planning has been proved to be valid and significant for Thai people who are in the age group of 22 to 55 years and having a sufficient regular income of THB 20,000 or more per month. It was also proved that there exists a higher level of financial literacy and goal clarity among the above class of Thai citizens. Therefore, the investment products like pension plans, retirement plans, mutual funds, annuities, insurance etc. that are offered by investment / insurance companies shall be attractive among the above class of people in Thailand.

ItemSTEM and Online Literacy Programs in Schools of Dubai, U.A.E. - An EnquiryThe main purpose of education is to build a progressive society. A progressive society is the one where development of each individual leads to the collective well-being and welfare. In every society, language is the most essential tool for imparting knowledge. Modern knowledge is deeply rooted in the scientific inventions, discoveries and technological innovations of the 20th century. Hence proficiency in English is a key for the acquisition of modern knowledge. The school education system in Dubai, UAE has been focusing on these two aspects to make their country an education hub. Dubai is a unique cross-section of the globe where different nationalities and races co-exist for employment, business, education, hi-fi life, living and enjoyment. This book is a collection of two studies conducted in the Schools of Dubai- the first study is about the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education and the second study is about the improving English reading skills of L2 students. Good STEM education is essential for preparing scientists, engineers, and technocrats to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The first study has been conducted in the schools of Dubai to determine the interest of students in pursuing STEM education and career. The results of this study indicate that students in Dubai schools have a genuine interest in STEM. However, the lack of teachers’ commitment to the delivery of appropriate STEM topics needs to be tackled by appropriate measures. The objective of the second study is to develop a conceptual framework for testing the efficacy of an online reading tool, namely, ‘Literacy Pro’ developed by Scholastic Corporation in the USA. The conceptual framework also measures the impact of students’ performance in international English proficiency exams, such as PISA, PIRLS, TIMSS, and ASSET after they have participated in the online ‘Literacy Pro’ program. This study indicates that ‘at-risk’ students can benefit from additional online instructions or interventions.
