ItemAn exploration of grit and research efficacy in graduate students( 2019) Poonpilas Asavisanu ; Watana VinitwatanakhunGrit, as a non-cognitive factor, has emerged as a concept of interest in relation to achievement in various groups such as employees, athletes, and students in both school and university. This research looks at grit and its relationship to research efficacy in graduate students. Two major objectives form the basis for this study. The first being to add to the knowledge base about grit and its relationship to demographic variables such as age, gender and academic achievement. The second objective of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between grit and research self-efficacy. This study involved 131 graduate students from Assumption University who were asked to respond to the Grit Scale and an adapted version of the SERM (Self-Efficacy in Research Measure). Statistical analysis was carried out to find correlations between grit and demographic variables such as gender and age and GPA. The findings from this study concluded that there was no significant difference in levels of grit for male and female graduate students. Grit was found to be positively correlated with age, while it was not found to be correlated with GPA. In relation to research self-efficacy, a linear multiple regression found a statistically significant relationship with grit and research efficacy: r (131) = .339, p > .01. The results of this study both confirm and refute some of the previous research done on grit in various populations. Nonetheless, there are implications for the use of grit in enhancing research self-efficacy, increasing graduate student research productivity and subsequently, the success of graduate programs.

ItemFactors leading to faculty engagement: a comparative study regarding two private universities one in the U.S. and one in Thailand( 2010-01) Watana VinitwatanakhunThis study examines the factors leading to Faculty Engagement through two private Universities, one in the U.S. and one in Thailand. The underlying focus of this study is to identify related factors that affect Faculty Engagement in order to boost faculty's morale, enhance performance and reduce the turnover to some extent. Winning Faculty Engagement gives universities competitive advantage. Progressive administrators should leverage engagement-enhancing practices as a way to foster faculty performance and, in turn, the overall performance of the university. The nine factors are Culture and Values, Common Purpose, Communication and Cooperation, Relationship with Administrators, My Team, My Job, Learning and Development, Performance and Feedback, and Reward and Recognition These factors were examined as independent variables. The result of the Independent Sample t-Test of two Universities indicates that Dominican University of California (DUC) and Assumption University (AU) are different in four factors: communication and cooperation, learning and development, performance and feedback, and reward and recognition. Multiple-regression model was conducted to identify the most consecutive significant influence factors. In summary, three out of nine factors for DUC and four out of nine factors for AU demonstrated statistically significant relationships with Faculty Engagement. The Correlations Analysis has shown that all nine independent variables were significantly related. This study has found that job satisfaction (meaning at work), reward and recognition (being valued and involved), having a good relationship with administrator and common purposes, and learning and development in a conducive working environment can lead to a high level of engagement and performance amongst all groups of faculty.

ItemThe psychological contract and Graduate student advisingChanges in higher education in Thailand have necessitated that higher education institutions compete for funding and students. Thus, it has become imperative that universities find ways to stay viable. Trends are pointing to a need for higher education providers to expand their focus to different groups of students such as graduate students and the reskilling of older students. Although graduate students may make up a smaller portion of the student numbers, research into areas that address graduate studentexpectations and satisfaction have potential benefit. As training of graduate students typically involves having them conduct research under the supervision of an advisor, and as this relationship has been said to be one of the most crucial aspects in graduate students’satisfaction with their programs and decisions to leave;study of this relationship dynamic by using the psychological contract theory as a framework may yield useful information applicable to improve the policy and training of graduate student programs. The purpose of this article is threefold: 1) it will introduce the concept of the psychological contract; 2) it will presentthe concept of the psychological contract asa valid perspective for viewing graduate students’expectations in regard toadvising, and 3) it will put forth suggestions for future research on graduate student advising in the hopes that research in this area will contribute to graduate student satisfaction.
