ItemCorrelation between foreign English second language(ESL) teachers' reasons to teach in Thailand and Thai students perceptions towards ESL teachersCareful attention should be given to the individual motivations of foreign native and non-native ESL teachers wanting to teach a variety of subjects using the English language as the language of instruction at Thai educational organizations. Schools should, apart from looking at the basic qualifications of a teacher, also look at what are the motivational factors which drives the teacher to teach in Thailand. The motivational factors which are the driving force behind the teacher, will influence the student’s approval rates of the teacher, and as such can lead to more meaningful learning experiences for the students. The results of this research revealed that students could vividly recall both the best and worst teachers, and could provide rhyme and reason as to why the students were thinking in that manner. Furthermore, traveling teachers, teachers who would only stay at the school for one or two terms, were not memorable to the students, and as such didn’t have any proven positive or negative impact on the students.

ItemDesigning hyperledger indy blockchain to electronically certify students' academic credentialsPurpose of the research paper is to investigate available blockchain technologies and identify one that can be adapted as a solution to electronically verify academic credentials of a person. The general objective is to investigate types of open-sources and Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) compatible cloud-based blockchain platforms in the market with specific research objectives to identify security features and consensus mechanism, and systems architecture of the solution, respectively. The methodology used for the research is qualitative in nature to reviewing literatures. Hyperledger Indy is found to be a good fit for the solution because it is DIDs compatible, and its inherent security features and consensus mechanism are highly secure. A high-level use case of the solution and systems architecture is created based on the security features that utilizes Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) scheme and Redundant Byzantine Fault Tolerant (RBFT) consensus mechanism. This study itself is and evidence that the free resources made available by the Hyperledger Indy project enables organizations to design and develop prototypes per their requirements. Benefits of the research paper are further validating the potential use of DIDs compatible blockchain framework to electronically certify verifiable credentials, and realization of shifting the ownership of credentials from third-party entities to the users themselves through use of Self-sovereignty Identity (SSI) feature.

ItemDeterminants of quality in higher education: faculty perspective(Digital Production Press, Assumption University, 2017) Brahmakasikara, Laura ; Naree Achwarin ; Satha PhongsathaThere has been a debate amongst academicians as to what quality means in higher education. Quality means differently in each country depending on the context, political context, rules and regulations as what constitute quality since quality assurance practices vary from country to country as well as quality assurance requirements. Due to these discrepancies, this paper mainly focuses on key players the authors perceive as determinants of quality in higher education and their roles in pursuing continuous quality in the provision of education. They are the institution leaders which include the deans of each school, program directors and team leaders; faculty members, who are active players in the delivery of quality education, have the necessary academic qualifications and commitment and are constantly developing themselves through professional development initiatives; support staff, who provide the technical assistance and support to students and faculty members and the quality of students undertaking programs of study in an educational institution. These people are pivotal in ensuring that each member of the institution takes part in the provision of quality education. The authors believe that quality in education does not exist in paper only but quality means an interplay between the key players mentioned in this paper. This paper also discusses the roles and responsibilities of these important players to ensure quality in higher education.

ItemDIMENSIONS OF PATERNALISTIC LEADERSHIP AND EMPLOYEE OUTCOMES IN SMALL THAI FIRMS(Digital Production Press, Assumption University, 2017) Duangta Duangekanong ; Somsit Duangekanong ; John, Varughese K. ; Asawin Wichayachakorn ; Nithiphong VikitsetThe purpose of this study is to examine the effect of paternalistic leadership dimensions (authoritarian, benevolent, and moral) on employee outcomes in small Thai firms. Outcomes examined include two intermediate outcomes (organizational commitment and job satisfaction) and one further outcome, resulting from organizational commitment and job satisfaction, which was self-reported in-role job performance. Paternalistic leadership was studied because of its cultural consonance in Thailand and its status as a frequently observed leadership approach. Data was collected from a sample of small firm employees in Thailand (n = 218). The study used a structural equation modelling (SEM)-based approach to examine the proposed relationships. The results showed that while benevolent and moral leadership had positive effects on employee organizational commitment and job satisfaction, authoritarian leadership had a weak negative effect on these two outcomes. Organizational commitment and job satisfaction had positive effects on job performance, with a stronger effect seen for organizational commitment. The implication of these findings is that some aspects of paternalistic leadership are effective for small firms in a Thai cultural context, but that authoritarian models of paternalistic leadership should not take precedence. This is useful information for small firm leaders as well as policymakers focusing on SME development.

ItemAn examination of foreign policy strategies of middle powers during great competition: a case study of Thailand's strategic hedging between a dominant USA and ascending China( 2019) Mandiolaza, Gustavo A.Recent years has seen confusion in the international political system as the hegemony of the U.S. has waned while China’s international influence has dramatically increased. This change to the status quo from a unipolar system immediately after the Cold War to a bipolar or multipolar system has compelled states in the Asia region to formulate strategies in response to this change. The three typical strategies available to a state are what is referred to as bandwagoning, balancing, and this article’s focus; hedging. In the case of Thailand, being relatively far removed from the epicentre of any future confrontation between Washington and Beijing, the state has options as to how it will approach the upcoming change in the regional power distribution. This essay intends to analyse the foreign policy strategy of Bangkok from early 2012 to the contemporary period to determine whether trends have emerged that may illustrate the direction of its foreign policy in the near future. By examining recent hardware purchase diversification, public statements, and the changing nature of military exercises between Thailand and the USA and Thailand and China, it is possible to make the conclusion that Thailand has adopted a hedging policy. This essay will explore how Thailand has moved beyond the traditional Thai-U.S. Alliance that lasted for most of the Cold War and is now entering into a more pragmatic position where overt allegiance is less public than before, prompting questions and possibly suspicion from both great powers in the near future.
