ItemCultures as determinants of innovation - an evidence from European contextCultural studies have played a major role for a better understanding of innovation. In particular, cultural variables have always been integrated in innovation studies at different levels. Referring to Hofstede´s analytical framework, we thereby analyze how different cultural factors may concretely impact innovation at national levels. Data of Hofstede’s cultural dimension and innovation are derived from secondary data sources. 34 European countries with comprehensive scores of cultural dimensions and innovation indexes are finally applied in this study. The data are analysed through correlation test and multiple regression analysis. The correlation test highlighted the importance of low power distance, individualism and low uncertainty avoidance, and the multiple regression analysis revealed the importance of power distance and long-term orientation that foster innovation in Europe. Finally, limitations of the proposed theoretical architecture are discussed and potential consequences for further research are formulated.

ItemThe influence of culture, gender and academic achievement on foreign language anxiety( 2016) Angsana ChanakAlthough a multitude of research studies have been conducted on communication anxiety, studies investigating cultural factors and communication anxiety from both a reading and writing perspective are limited. To help educators, the present study compared students from Thailand and the People‟s Republic of China (PRC) at an international university, in order to discover if culture, gender and academic achievement are significantly related to reading and writing anxiety. The results indicated that overall reading anxiety was not significantly different for Thai and Chinese students but an inclusion of gender shows that Chinese male students experienced more reading anxiety compared to Thai male students but Chinese and Thai female students showed no differences. In addition, Chinese students who possessed a lower grade point average (GPA) displayed higher overall reading anxiety. Writing anxiety was manifested overall, more by Chinese students than Thai students and an in-depth analysis revealed that the somatic dimension was more for Chinese students but the avoidance dimension was higher for Thai students. Furthermore, when gender was considered, Thai female students displayed more somatic anxiety compared to Chinese female students. Chinese male students on the other hand, had higher somatic anxiety and avoidance compared to the Thai male students. When grade point average (GPA) was included it was found that overall Thai students had better grades but still more avoidance compared to Chinese students with lower grades but more somatic anxiety.

ItemPragmatic awareness and its role in both teaching and learning English(Assumption University, 2017) Tassev, Valentin Valentinov ; Assumption University. Graduate School of EnglishBroadly speaking, the following research study will examine critically the impact of local socio-cultural factors on the process of second language acquisition (SLA) among Thai learners of English. In particular, it will highlight that when learning a second/foreign language (L2), people often respond to certain expressions in the new language more engagingly if these expressions somehow represent a concept or an idea that people are familiar with or can easily identify with from the perspective of their own cultures. Throughout this research study, I am thus advocating for more pragmatic awareness, pragmatic competence and shared cultural knowledge among teachers and learners of English, as I believe it will help us interpret each other's intended meaning(s) better and inform us as teachers on how to conduct our teaching practices better when teaching the L2.

ItemThe shifting paradigms in second language research(Assumption University Press, 2009) Foley, Joseph A. ; Assumption University. Graduate School of EnglishThis paper first looks at the psychological oriented tradition in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and in spite of the valuable contributions made, the number of shortcomings in the explanation of how people learn a language. There has been a shift in paradigm in terms of research into SLA in the last few decades, in that a more socially oriented explanation of language learning is seen as equally important for a complete account of how language acquisition and development takes place. Research into SLA from this perspective would involve looking at how contexts of learning differ, the cultural and social characteristics of learners in varying contexts, the needs for and attitudes towards the language being learnt in those contexts.

ItemA study on the influence of Thai cultural factors on attitudes and perceptions of ADHDThe current research examined Thai cultural factors, such as religiosity, stigmatization of mental disorders, holistic thinking, and health locus of control towards attitudes and perceptions of ADHD, moderated by prior exposure to ADHD. The Thai translated scales Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales (MHLC), the SBI (Religious Beliefs/Practices), the Community Attitudes towards the Mentally Ill scale, the ADHD Stigma questionnaire (ASQ) (attitudes towards ADHD), Choi’s Analysis-Holism Scale, the ADHD Beliefs Scale-revised (perceptions of ADHD) were used for testing the model. The factor structure was examined via confirmatory factor analysis and reliability and validity were established initially before testing the model. Further, SEM was utilized to test the relationships between the aforementioned cultural factors and attitudes and perceptions of ADHD (n = 323). The results indicated significant relationships between cultural factors and negative opinions of ADHD. The current research aimed to contribute to the understanding of unique aspects of ADHD in Thailand. Future research may explore methods to increase knowledge of ADHD and reduce negative attitudes/perceptions of ADHD.
