ItemA correlational study of intensive English program students’ perceptions of teacher rapport and delivery, motivation for learning and academic achievement in the intensive English class at the institute of liberal arts and sciences, Maijayang, Kachin State, Myanmar(Bangkok : Assumption University Press, 2022) Pan, Sut Ngai Htoi ; Gonzalez, Orlando Rafael GonzalezThis quantitative study aimed to investigate whether there was a significant relationship of students’ perceptions of teacher rapport and delivery, motivation for learning, and academic achievement in the Intensive English Program at the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Myanmar. The population comprised of 48 students in the Intensive English Program (IEP) during the academic year of 2019-2020. The research instruments were the Students’ Perceptions of Teacher Rapport and Delivery Questionnaire (SPTRDQ; Barnes & Lock, 2013), the Questionnaire for Measuring Motivation for Learning English as a Foreign Language (QMMLEFL; Gardner, 2010), and the Intensive English examination. Data collection was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and multiple correlation coefficients. The research findings indicated that the students perceived teacher rapport and delivery in the Intensive English class as good, and their motivation for learning EFL was high. The IEP students were found to have good academic achievement. The results from the correlational analysis revealed significant, moderately strong multiple linear relationships of students’ perception of teacher delivery and motivation for learning EFL with their academic achievement in the Intensive English class, whereas no significant relationship was found between participants’ perception of teacher rapport and their academic achievement.

ItemBlended learning in teaching piano major students in the music department of Hunan vocational college of artPurpose: The purposes of the research were to 1) explore the effectiveness of the blended learning approach of piano on the performance of the major students in the Music department of Hunan Vocational College of Art and 2) to determine the students' perceptions of the blended learning approach through a questionnaire survey. The participants of this study were 59 students majoring in piano, freshmen and sophomores who were studying with a face-to-face method and Violy application at the Music Department of Hunan Vocational College of Art. The quantitative research design of the quasi-experiment and questionnaire were conducted. The paired sample t-test was applied for hypothesis testing while the descriptive analysis—mean and standard deviation were used to report the samples' perceptions towards blended learning. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the scores of piano performance post-test after Violy had been employed and the pretest. The four piano performances measured-accuracy, technique, musicality, and repertoire difficulty had shown the improvement scores of the students once the Violy application was integrated as a teaching method. In addition, the students exposed to the Violy application expressed positive attitudes toward the usage of the Violy application. Therefore, the Violy application is a proven effective learning tool to improve student piano performance.

ItemA comparative study of English language learners' perceptions towards traditional and sheltered instruction methods in middle and high school at Pan-Asia International School, ThailandThe primary purposes of this research were to investigate learners’ perceptions towards traditional and sheltered instruction methods of the grades 6, 8 and 9 middle and high school students in Pan-Asia International School, Thailand, and to determine whether there is any perceived difference between the two methods. This research was conducted from March 21st to June 3rd, 2016 in the final semester of the 2016 academic year. The sample for this study was comprised of 116 students enrolled at Pan-Asia International School in middle and high school (Grades 6, 8 and 9). In this study an adapted version of the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) questionnaire was used as the primary tool of data collection. The data collected from the questionnaire was analyzed by mean and standard deviation and a t-test (two-tailed). The study found that the students’ perception towards traditional instruction was positive in seven out of the eight components of the SIOP. Students’ perception towards sheltered instruction was found to be positive in all eight components of the SIOP. In conclusion then, the data from the questionnaire shows that the respondents as a whole, showed an overall positive perception towards traditional and sheltered instruction. The study showed a significant difference in the English Language Learner perceptions towards traditional and sheltered instruction methods in middle and high schools at Pan-Asia International School at a 0.05 significance level. Teachers should be made well aware of the sheltered instruction model and offered professional development to complement their range of instructional skills. This in turn should help to improve students’ academic achievement. The efficacy of the SIOP model would need to be researched in depth for a long period of time for any substantial evidence to be obtained. It is recommended that Pan-Asia International School uses this data to help plan future professional development for middle and high school teachers, and possibly eventual school-wide changes in teacher instruction.

ItemA comparative study of teachers' knowledge of common ICT software, their perceptions towards using ICT and their perceived self-confidence in integrating ICT in their classes according to gender in two international schools in ThailandThis study aimed to determine teachers' knowledge of common ICT software, their perceptions towards using ICT and their perceived self-confidence in integrating ICT in their classes according to gender in two international schools in Thailand in 2015. Students in Thailand and globally need to be able to cope well with the demands of the 21st century skills and ICTs are an important element of curricula worldwide. Therefore, the researcher wanted to determine if the male or the female teachers were more skilled in ICT to be able to pass on the knowledge to their students. An online questionnaire was used as a primary data collection instrument. The questionnaire measured the three variables of interest: knowledge of common ICT software, perceptions of ICT use, and perceived self-confidence in integrating ICT in their classes. The study respondents were teachers working in two international schools in Bangkok, Thailand. A total of 145 teachers (84 male and 81 female) were targeted with the online questionnaire. Ninety-seven teachers responded out of which 49 were male and 48 were female. The study found that both male and female teachers had high knowledge of common ICT software. However, the male teachers had more positive perceptions of ICT and higher perceived self-confidence in integrating ICT in to their classes as compared to the female teachers. Recommendations For both practice and future research are provided.

ItemA comparative study of teachers' perception towards values education management according to their demographics at Bangkok Christian International School, ThailandThe primary purpose of this research was to determine teachers' perceptions towards values education management according to their demographics in Bangkok Christian International School in Thailand. The study surveyed all 45 teachers in Pre-school, Elementary school, and High school department at Bangkok Christian International School in Thailand during the academic year 2016-2017. The research used the questionnaire adopted from Ye’s (2006) study, based on the Ministerial Council on Education in Australian (2002). The research found that teachers' perception towards values education management at BCIS in Bangkok, Thailand was regarded as much practice, and there were no significant differences in the teachers’ perception towards values education management according to their demographics, including gender, nationality, educational background, and teaching experience at Bangkok Christian International School in Thailand. For the school improvement regarding values education management, administrators and teachers at the school were recommended to develop the channel of conversation and cooperation with parents, create projects to promote the fundamental values of Christian values, and improve the effective planning and management for enhancing Christian values development.

ItemEFL university teachers' professional development in the Thai context( 2018) Sureepong PhothongsunanThis study aims to explore the perceptions of 30 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers serving in public universities in Thailand regarding needs, challenges and quality of teacher career development in their universities. A questionnaire and an interview are employed to gather data. According to the teacher development programs offered, all universities served by the participants provide prospects for teachers to have further in-service education. In relation to professional development, nearly all participants point out a strong need for obtaining a higher degree as career advancement in their field and interestingly as a tool for salary increment. Teacher collaboration and student learning also emerge as possible factors motivating teachers to strive for self-improvement. Although undertaking research is referred to as an important and for some a required element for English teaching jobs, time-consuming nature and a sophisticated process discourage its instigation. Regarding views about quality of university teacher development, most report being satisfied with the overall universities’ emphasis on improving English teaching and learning by accentuating teachers as a key. However, teachers’ lacking motivation to progress professionally due to excessive teaching workload and internal politics embedded in some universities can be reasons preventing teachers from securing educational growth. Implications from the study shed light on the significance to support the quality of university teachers through furnishing sufficient opportunities of professional development and what Thai EFL university teachers aspire to accomplish most to develop themselves efficiently.

ItemForeign tourists' perception towards personal safety and potential crime while visiting Bangkok( 2008) Batra, AdarshBangkok as an international core city contributes to the tourism industry of Thailand and the Asian region. The purpose of this study is to assess foreign tourists' perception on safety and concern of potential crime while traveling and staying in Bangkok in October 2006. The research data was collected from 384 questionnaires which were distributed at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. The findings revealed that personal factors such as nationality had an influence on respondent's perceptions and concern for safety and security. Some respondents especially, European tourists, expressed a lower sense of security concern when compared with the respondents from other regions. In the light of the findings, it is recommended that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) should investigate the safety needs and requirements of tourists arriving from various markets, and communicate to government and related authorities these safety concerns to ensure that they can be better understand and managed. Tourist Police should provide greater level of vigilance through regularly patrols around the tourist dominant areas to ensure a “hassle” free experience for foreign tourists in Bangkok.

ItemPerceiving native English speaking teachers: EFL university students’ perspectives( 2017) Sureepong PhothongsunanTo allude to the ‘native speaker’ concept and investigate the native speaker effects, this research looks into the perceptions of 25 Thai EFL university students towards native English speaking teachers. How native English speaking teachers influence the participants’ learning behaviours and motivation to learn English are also perceptually reported. Two research instruments, the survey questionnaire and the semi-structured interview, are employed for this study. The findings indicate overall positive perceptions towards native English speaking teachers, pointing that their classes are mostly fun, interactive and motivating. The flexible and interactive teaching methods and styles used by native English speaking teachers are found to be most favoured, followed by their approachable personality traits and the students’ vast opportunity to practice oral and written English. Most participants, if given an option to choose a teacher, have a salient preference to study with native English speaking teachers in which case neither teachers’ age nor gender matters. There seems to be a strong relationship between studying with native English speaking teachers and the participants’ learning behaviours and motivation to learn English.

ItemPerceptions and attitudes of upper Myanmar students and parents towards online learning: a case study of an internationa school in Mandalay during the COVID-19 pandemic( 2021) Garton, Michael ; Athipat CleesuntornThe aim of this study was to analyse and compare students’ and parents’ perceptions and attitudes towards online learning. The research took place at an international school in Mandalay, currently undergoing a period of online learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A seeming widespread disinclination towards this form of instruction lead to a focus on perceptions and attitudes and use of the Technology Acceptance Model. The reason for comparing the generations was to determine whether students, ‘digital natives’, would take more readily to online learning than their ‘digital immigrant’ parents, often deemed members of a ‘missing generation’ in Myanmar. Data and opinions were collected via electronic questionnaires from a total of 305 participants and examined using statistical analysis software. Multiple Linear Regression analyses were carried out to determine the influence of the independent variables, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, on attitude in both generations. A t-test was also conducted to compare values between generations. Perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness were shown to be good predictors for attitude in both generations, confirming results of earlier studies. No significant variances could be found in students’ and parents’ attitudes. However, there was a statistically significant difference for perceived usefulness, which contradicted the assumption that students would see more value in online learning than their parents. Opinions provided additional contextual data and highlighted several overriding concerns. Future research should widen the scope and examine actual use and effectiveness of online learning tools.

ItemThe relationship between teachers' perception towards their leadership capacity and school climate in the lovers of the cross of Ubon Ratchathani Schools, Thailand( 2019) Watcharaporn Nakpansa ; Yan, YeThe purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between teachers’ perceptions towards their leadership capacity and school climate in five selected schools under the leadership of the Lovers of the Cross of Ubon Ratchathani Congregation. The researcher used the high leadership capacity instrument adopted from Kujur (2016), and based on Lambert’s (2003) Leadership Capacity School Survey (LCSS), as well as the Schools’ Organizational Climate Survey (SOCS) adopted from Josaphat (2005). The results of this study showed that there was both a strong and significant relationship between the teachers’ perceptions towards their leadership capacity and their school climate in the respective schools. This study discussed those respective findings and found that school improvement and student achievement could be better facilitated by increasing teacher leadership capacity and improving the educational effectiveness through the implementation of a more conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning. The teachers and administrators were recommended to identify methods to develop and offer greater opportunities for teachers to facilitate shared ideas, enhance workplace engagement opportunities, develop methods of coherent discussion, as well as to assist and support each other to achieve the school goals. This research suggested that the achievement of these recommendations could be done by developing the communication within the learning community, engaging and inspiring students, collaborating more between shareholders to strengthen leadership capacities and to ultimately improve the school climate within the school. To facilitate this, it was proposed that teachers should revamp their teaching-learning processes through professional development and training, in order to raise teachers’ commitment and devotion to each individual learner.

ItemThe relationship of teachers' perception towards leadership capacity and organizational culture in the Marianists Schools, IndiaThe main purpose of this research study was to determine the relationship between teachers’ perceptions towards leadership capacity and organizational culture in the Marianists schools, India. The study was conducted to survey all the teachers from the selected 7 schools manage by the Marianists in India during the academic year 2016-2017. In this study, the research instrument for Part II investigated the teachers’ perception on leadership capacity was adapted from Pierce (2007) based on Lambert (2003) Leadership Capacity School Survey (LCSS) and questionnaire Part III measured the teachers’ perception for organizational culture adopted from Gruenert and Valentine’s (1998) School Culture Survey (SCS). The collected data from the survey re analyzed by Descriptive Statistics, Frequency and Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The study results showed that there was significant relationship between teachers’ perceptions towards leadership capacity and organizational culture. In order for the school improvement and sustenance, teachers and administrators from 7 Marianists schools in India are recommended to find out ways to create more opportunities for the teachers for sharing ideas, having frequent discussion, help each other in making lesion plans and collaboration in preparing school vision and mission to improve leadership capacity and organizational culture in their schools. Teachers should also pay attention on students’ achievement by giving more attention to each student.

ItemThe relationship of teachers' perception towards their leadership capacity and their level of job satisfaction in an international school in BangkokThe purpose of this research was to study the relationship of the teachers’ perception towards their leadership capacity and their level of job satisfaction in an international school in Bangkok during the academic year 2016-2017. This researcher used the high capacity leadership instrument adopted from Pierce (2007) based on Lambert’s (2003) leadership capacity school survey (LCSS), as well as the job satisfaction survey adopted from Drukpa (2004). The results showed there was a significant relationship between the teachers’ perception towards their leadership capacity and their level of job satisfaction in this international school. The correlation analysis result showed there was a strong positive relationship between teachers’ perception towards their leadership capacity and their level of job satisfaction. The findings were discussed and the research confirmed that sustained school improvement can be facilitated with increased teacher leadership capacity resulting in increased levels of job satisfaction among teachers as they experience improved student outcomes. The study recommended the school leaders and teachers to sustain and further develop their leadership capacity and skills so as to maintain the high level of job satisfaction.

ItemRevisiting English learning in Thai schools: why learners matter( 2019) Sureepong PhothongsunanGiven the increased prominence of English as a language for international communication, a question arises whether to what extent Thai school students are equipped with adequate English proficiency to be viable and intelligible in their actual use of English. In this paper, instead of simply calling attention to new English teaching methods and possibly unique types of teachers, the writer argues that what may be in need concerns the ways learners of English are perceived and the way English learning is understood. It is therefore suggested that learners who are at the core of learning be heard comprehensively. Based on learners’ needs and interests, opportunities and insights to help Thai school English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners to better develop their English skills can be had.

ItemA study of secondary school students' and teachers' perceptions of and satisfaction with service learning activities at Ruamrudee International School in ThailandThis study was conducted mainly to examine a service-learning program at RIS by determining students’ and teachers’ perception of the linkage and satisfaction with service learning activities and classroom learning experiences done at RIS. The sample included 254 secondary students and 52 teachers from Ruamrudee International School. This research found differences in students’ and teachers’ perceptions of service learning activities and satisfaction of learning experience statistically significant. Teachers gave a high rating to perceptions and satisfaction than students. A number of suggestions were given by students showing how important that service learning has been in strengthening and enhancing their education. Service Learning has served to enhance the process of making connections with learning in classroom and bringing to life through the experiences of serving and learning. In conclusion, the researcher suggests when constructing service learning activities, consider the needs of students, and elicit the support of teachers and the community partners. It is crucial to have the whole community join force and working together to bring out what is best for all.
