Graduate School of EducationEffective teacher placement is one of the most difficult problems facing educational administrators today. The data shows that 25% of teachers are leaving the job within their first year of service and 50% within their first 5 years of service. Much of this teacher attrition is believe to be attributed to poor hiring and placement practices. With modern research highlighting the importance of teachers’ personalities and dispositions to both their effectiveness and longevity, it is clear that new teacher placement models will be in demand. The objectives of this research are as follows: 1. To investigate if there is a relationship between teacher personality and the academic success of their students 2. To compare these potential relationships across four core subject areas and grade levels 1-6. 3. To propose an effective contingency-based personality model of teacher placement for use in international Singaporean primary schools in Thailand.

ItemAn educational intervention to improve cross-cultural, conflict resolution skills in Thai medical tourism(Assumption University, 2011) Richeson, William M. ; Assumption University. Graduate School of EducationWhile low English language proficiencies create significant barriers to communication, cultural dimensions in Thai medical tourism make cross-cultural conflict resolution (CCCR) even more problematic. Previous studies and interventions in English Language Teaching (ELT), English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Medical English Education (MEE) have focused on English language skills and cross-cultural knowledge. Significant improvements in conflict resolution skills have not been noted. This intervention integrates medical English and counseling skills. In each lesson, the instructor uses a skills scaffolding approach, and sequences learning objectives along Bloom‘s revised taxonomy of learning skills (BRT). The conflict resolution instruction and practice are based on Rosenberg‘s Non-violent Communication (NVC) protocols (2003). Participants learn and apply counseling skills via readings, role-plays, games and discussions. Conflict scenarios in medical tourism provide the primary content. The first third of the thirty, weekly, medical English and counseling workshops at Piyavate Hospital, Bangkok, and the first three study phases of six, preassessment, curriculum development and progress assessments of workshops one through ten have been completed. The assessment results reported here convey participants‘ conflict and cross-cultural communication values in three areas: uncertainty avoidance, conflict avoidance, and patient assertiveness. Both pre-assessment and progress assessment include completion of an eighteen- item Likert scale survey derived from Hofstede (1980), and Chareonrook (2000). This integrative approach via combined medical English and conflict-resolution training suggests ways that counseling may be integrated into Thai, medical English curriculum.

ItemA model of effective challenge management strategies of chairpersons in private international university in ThailandChairperson is an academic leader in Public and Private Higher Educational Universities in Thailand. This study mainly emphasizes on Private International Universities. There is a widespread perception of a lack of good leadership in our society in the phase of increasingly challenging problems and needs. This study emphasizes mainly on coping with demand and change in the market, and the expectation of stakeholders from private international universities. Learning, leading and progressing are deeply intertwined and we need to regard each other as worthy of attention caring and involvement if they are to learn together. It is in fact reciprocal. The main objectives of this study are to explore the roles chairperson perform as chair and the challenges chairpersons confront challenges chairpersons confront while performing their roles as chair, and what strategies they use to deal with the challenges. Finally develop a model of effective challenge management strategies will be developed for the chairpersons.

ItemA study of learning outcome of innovative approach in teaching mathematics in primary students(Assumption University, 2011) Chaudhury, Chandrali Roy ; Suwattana Eamoraphan, jt. auth. ; Assumption University. Graduate School of EducationThe study was conducted to identify innovative approaches in teaching Mathematics in primary grades to achieve higher learning outcomes. The derivatives applied in the study range from the teacher manipulative to student motivation. The research objectives were to study the learning outcome of innovative approach in teaching mathematics in primary students and to observe the attitude of students towards learning. The examined population was comprised of 33 students of primary grades from an International School in Thailand. The primary source of data is the student performance in the school prior to application of innovative approaches. The four different approaches, visual, hands on application, Media application and Project work were used to teach the students. The researcher wanted to observe the increase in the learning outcome. The research design was based on one group experimental design comprising of Pretest (O1) and Posttest (O2) results. The research instrument consist of, Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation and Periodical assessment to study the grades and Questionnaire to study the attitudes. Findings in this research were reviewed by scope of deriving new teaching standards is evident, which can be pursued for future researches and developing strategies for teaching and conducting studies can thus be highly beneficial for learning outcomes. It was observed 42.4% students’ performance greatly improved from B or C grade to A & A* grade. The students’ response to the innovative approach was also highly encouraging as majority approved of them and it was observed, that students had improved Interest level and Participation after application of Innovative approaches.

ItemA study of the relationship between transformational leadership style and situational factors for successful operation at Assumption Samutprakan School, Thailand(Assumption University, 2011) Gorjian, Maliheh ; Assumption University. Graduate School of EducationThis correlational study examined the relationship between transformational leadership style and three situational factors (leader-member exchange or LMR, task structure or TS, and position power or PP) for successful operation at Assumption Samutprakarn School, Thailand. To meet the study’s objectives, all 99 administrators and academic departments of the target school were given a survey questionnaire to complete (Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire–to measure transformational leadership style, Situational Factor Questionnaire–to measure the three situational factors, and researcher-constructed questions aimed at depicting the demographic profile of the participants). The major findings of this study were: (1) The school administrators and academic departments perceived that they have high transformational leadership style, high leader-member relations, high task-structure, and high position power; (2) Transformation leadership style was not found to be significantly related to the leader-member relations situational factor (p>.05); (3) Transformational leadership style is positively and significantly related to the task-structure situational factor (p<.01); and (4) Transformational leadership style was positively and significantly related to the position power situational factor (p<.001).
