Description
The two-day event at Anurak Community Lodge gave valuable training in conservation and tourism hospitality to local service providers in Khao Sok National Park area Surat Thani, Thailand, June 26, 2018: Assumption University’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management organized a series of hospitality skills building workshops at Anurak Community Lodge, June 24 and 25, 2018. YAANA Ventures, a Bangkok based travel company partnered with lecturers to develop a Spirit of Hospitality workshop specifically for team members at their eco-friendly lodge.

Project Coordinator, Dr Scott Michael Smith explains, “The Spirit of Hospitality process begins with a visit to the property. Using industry accepted standards that relate specifically to the property, a service audit is prepared. Working with senior management, a training program is developed to meet the needs of this dynamic travel company. The lecturers facilitated workshops that encouraged team members to work together to identify opportunities to exceed customers’ expectations and create positive memory making moments throughout the guest experience.”

The win-win of this public private partnership is apparent from the deliverables. For YAANA Ventures, the good service provided be local team members is raised to the next level as their team members reaffirm their commitment to exceed expectations. For the travelers, they’ll receive excellent service, delivered by local community members in a remote and spectacular setting. For the university, lecturers gain a better understanding of the needs of tourism stakeholders and the practical applications of the theories taught in the classroom. They can share these experiences and inspire the future leaders in the tourism industry to build on the foundation of sustainable tourism development. “The best way to learn is to share the passion for excellent service among the experts and passing it to the next generation.” said Ajarn Wanwisa Khampanya.

YAANA Ventures founder, Willem Niemeijer is committed to growing the business in a sustainable manner using responsible travel practices at the core of product development and operations. He strongly advocates that sustainability is no longer a luxury but an imperative in order to leave a world that is livable for our children. “YAANA Ventures fully supports the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit in responsible tourism,” said Willem.

Resident Lodge Manager Marius Herrmann adds, “The operational focused training provided a better understanding of applied concepts throughout all departments. Having the Assumption University team presented content in English and Thai languages helped to engage and improve the overall learning experience.” Anurak means “to conserve” in Thai language. Anurak Lodge is an eco-friendly lodge with 18 comfortable rooms in bungalow-style. The lodge is a jump off point for tours and activities into Khao Sok National Park and to the nearby Cheow Lan Lake, one of the most stunning areas of South Thailand. Established in 1980, Khao Sok National Park conserves 739 square kilometres of forested hills in Surat Thani Province, South Thailand. The rainforest of Khao Sok National Park is one of the oldest in the world. The lodge opened its doors in 2015. Anurak Community Lodge is designed, built and operated sustainably. They seek to protect, preserve and enhance the natural beauty of their surroundings while enriching the lives of the community around them.

The workshop was conducted by Assumption University’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. The event, which took place at Anurak Community Lodge, was sponsored by YAANA Ventures and it's partner AwardBird, that offers airline tickets for bonus miles, a Bangkok based sustainable tourism investor.
