As globalization advances and the world witnesses its boons and banes, much of the efficacy of the fellow-feelings among humankind interacting in the global village, is inspired by the lives and work of harbingers of peace, understanding and hope. Today the international academic community of Assumption University honors and celebrates the lifetime work of one such anointed son of the Catholic Church, ARCHBISHOP SALVATORE PENNACCHIO.

Born in Marano (Naples-Italy) on 7 September 1952, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, the Titular Archbishop of Montemarano since November 28, 1998, was ordained priest on September 18, 1976 for the Diocese of Aversa. The Blessed Pope John Paul II as the then Pope, ordained Salvatore Pennacchio as Archbishop, at the Basilica of St. Peterís on January 6, 1999. Earning a Baccalaureate in Theology from the Pontifical University of Theology, Naples) in 1976, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio thereafter earned a Doctorate in Philosophy from University of Naples in 1976, and Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University in 1978. Between the years 1976 and 1979 he attended the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy from where he obtained his diploma in Diplomatic Science which led thereafter to him serving in various Apostolic Nunciatures: Panama (1979-1982); Ethiopia (1982-1985); Australia (1985-1986); Turkey (1987-1989); Egypt (1989-1991); Yugoslavia (1991-1995); Ireland (1995-1998) and Rwanda (1998-2003). Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the Kingdom of Thailand, the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Republic of Singapore, as well as Apostolic Delegate to the Union of Myanmar, Malaysia, Lao Peopleís Democratic Republic and the Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam between the years 2003 and 2010. Following this, he was nominated Apostolic Nuncio to India on May 8, 2010 and on November 13, 2010 he was also nominated as Apostolic Nuncio to Nepal. Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio held two Ecclesiastical Titles: Chaplain of His Holiness Pope John Paul II in 1986 and Honorary Prelate of His Holiness Pope John Paul II in 1996.

Accruing from his valuable contributions as religious and as emissary of the Holy See, Archbishop Salvatore has received the following honors and titles: Knight Commander with plaque of the Order of Vasco Nunez de Balboa received from the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Panama in June 1982, Red Cross Medal of Appreciation, Second Class, received from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in September 2009, Chaplain ìad honoremî of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM)/Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta received from H.E. The Grand Master of the SMOM in Rome in May 2010 and more recently, a Royal Decoration of the Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant of Thailand received at the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi on August 12, 2011.

During his tenure of diplomatic service in the Kingdom of Thailand and in the surrounding countries, while contributing as resource speaker to academic and international fora on wide ranging topics which include Catholic canonical doctrines, social justice and peace and caring for the natural environment, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio displayed leadership and brinkmanship in spearheading relief to the local and international communities in catastrophic crises such as the Tsunami of 2004, cyclone Nargis in Myanmar in 2008, with as much equal magnanimity towards building communities and socially empowering centers in Thailand and in the surrounding countries between 2004 and 2010. Through his vision and unstinting efforts today Assumption University hosts the John Paul II Center for Catholic Social Thought, one of the very few such centers in the Asia Pacific Region.

In summary, selectively few great selfless personalities have transcended race, color and national boundaries to bring the message of hope, justice and humanitarian relief to their fellowmen. Archbishop Salavatore Pennacchio joins the ranks of the inspired and gifted, in spreading inter-religious harmony and understanding through their work and it is for this remarkable trait in him that the Assumption University Council with the Academic Community of Assumption University bestows upon him the title of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Honoris Causa on the seventeenth day of August, the Year of the Lord, Two Thousand and Twelve.
