Problem Space and Solution Space Practice in Design Methods in Relation to Exotelic and Autotelic Experience: A Theoretical Exploration
Design methods practiced in the modern industrial era tend to override the joy of designing. As the understanding of design as science emerged in the 1980s, prescriptive design methods have gradually replaced the descriptive design methods traditionally practiced by designers. In response to the world’s demand for cheap products, prescriptive design methods have also led to labor exploitation through mass production processes, which have ultimately changed the work-life experiences of those involved. This phenomenon has resulted in an "exotelic" work-life experience that is driven by fulfilling external goals as opposed to an "autotelic" work-life experience driven by fulfilling self-sustaining goals. Autotelic experience is a vital component of "flow" that makes life more meaningful, thus resulting in happier citizens and a better society. In this light, this study aims to explore the theoretical framework of practices of "problem space" and "solution space" in "descriptive" and "prescriptive" models of design methods. Moreover, this study seeks to determine how practices are related to levels of creativity and "flow," which is an important factor in a model of an alternative design method focused on autotelic approaches to work, thus rendering work-life experience more pleasant and effective.

Bridge the Gap Between Local Governments and Communities: Key Factors in Generating Community Involvement in the Historic Preservation District in Japan1
Since 1795, 106 districts in Japan have been selected as Important Historic Preservation Districts (Juuyo dentouteki kenzoubutsugun hozon chiku [Juudenken]). The system for protection of cultural properties enables the local government to name a “Preservation District” and allows for the development of a preservation plan based on local ordinances. Moreover, the well-organized, bottom-up networks, which are groups for community development activities on the basis of local participation, play an important role in raising awareness and conducting several preservation projects in their own towns. This study mainly focused on cultural resources management in the local community. The system, which possibly bridged the gap between the local authorities and the community, was revealed. Fifty non-profit groups and active citizens, who were engaged in an advanced stage of community participation in Juudenken, were selected to be interviewed. The results then were analyzed using STAT program. The significant associations were shown by mapping the associations related to the public process of community involvement. Each variable had its own significant meaning and contributed credible indirect association to community involvement. The network mapping indicated that balancing the local economy and technical conservation was important in generating community involvement, which provided a model on how local authorities and communities could articulate and maintain their own cultural resources.

The Increasing Importance of Advanced Building Simulations in a New Building Design Paradigm
This paper presents and discusses the increasing importance of advanced building simulations in the design of high performance buildings. A changing building design industry increasingly requires simulations to achieve high energy efficiency and sustainability, while safeguarding occupant comfort, for the built environment. The paper introduces two main numerical design tools, energy simulations (ES) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Much of the building industry and even many academic architecture programs have not yet embraced advanced simulations as indispensable tools of the design process and building operation, as well as an important educational focus for the next generation of architects. The paper discusses how a successful implementation of the new design paradigms based on advanced simulation tools in academia and the building industry are hampered by technology and human barriers. The paper proposes several measures to successful overcome these barriers. Several important of application of advanced simulation are discussed such as building energy consumption;natural ventilation, dispersion of pollutants in and around buildings and occupant comfort performance.

Privatized VS Community-Based Neighborhood Governance in the Context of Economic Renovation in Vietnam: Case Study of Ho Chi Minh Cit
Rapid economic growth, as a result of economic reforms, has commonly brought unintended outcomes of increasing socio-spatial differentiation and unequal neighborhood development in post-socialist cities. Through two case studies in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam each corresponding to a residential area with adverse socio-economic conditions, this paper argues that since economic renovation began in the country in 1986, coupled with the housing segregation in urban development, neighborhood governance has become increasingly differentiated with the emergence of the private sector and more active communities as well as civil society organizations in dealing with neighborhood issues. Their level of involvement and effectiveness in governing the neighborhood depends on the background of the communities and the loosening role of local government. Although more privatized neighborhood governance brings better quality to urban neighborhoods in association with better socio-economic conditions for the residents, the level of the residents’ participation in neighborhood governance and the sense of community in such cases is weaker than that in the case of a community-based approach, which results in poorer neighborhood conditions due to the lower socio-economic profile of the residents.
